“He Already Knows…” – Arne Slot Confirms Liverpool’s New Vice-Captain ๐๐ฅ
Arne Slot Has Quietly Chosen Liverpool’s Next Vice-Captain – But It’s Still a Mystery to the Squad
Arne Slot has already decided who will step into Liverpool’s vacant vice-captaincy role following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s shock move to Real Madrid earlier this summer. However, while the chosen player has been privately informed, the rest of the squad—and the public—remain in the dark.
With Virgil van Dijk continuing as captain, the leadership team still includes Andy Robertson, Mo Salah, and Alisson Becker. But the vice-captain position, once held by Trent since 2023, remains officially unannounced.
Speaking after the Reds’ 3-1 win over Yokohama F. Marinos, where Wataru Endo took the armband late in the game, Slot remained tight-lipped about the new vice-skipper.
“The group doesn’t know yet,” Slot told liverpoolfc.com. “I’ve spoken to the individual, so the new vice-captain is already aware. It’s important to have leaders, even though it’s not as common in the modern game.
“Thankfully, I’ve got a few players who aren’t just experienced but also understand football deeply. They’re vocal and influential, both on and off the pitch – and that’s a huge asset.”
Slot Has No Shortage of Strong Options for Vice-Captain Role
With several experienced names in the squad, Arne Slot has a wealth of potential candidates to choose from for Liverpool’s vacant vice-captaincy. While the current leadership core hints that one of Andy Robertson, Mohamed Salah, or Alisson Becker could be next in line, Slot may look beyond that trio for his pick.
Given the importance of consistent game time, it’s unlikely that Wataru Endo—despite being Japan’s captain—will be considered, as he often features from the bench rather than as a regular starter.
Other possible contenders could come from outside the established leadership circle. Dominik Szoboszlai, who captains Hungary, and Ibrahima Konatรฉ, who has worn the armband for France, are both strong personalities with international leadership experience.
It won’t be long before the identity of Virgil van Dijk’s new deputy is revealed. But as Slot mentioned, Liverpool are fortunate to have several natural leaders on the pitch, capable of stepping up when needed. That kind of depth in leadership will be vital as they aim to defend their Premier League crown in the 2025/26 season.
