'I'll be brutally honest' - Steven Gerrard makes feelings clear on replacing Arne Slot at Liverpool

Steven Gerrard has voiced his support for Arne Slot, while also expressing his willingness to return to Liverpool in any role.

When the former Reds captain took the helm at Aston Villa in November 2021, many speculated it was only a matter of time before he would make his way back to Anfield as manager. A testing spell at Villa was quickly followed by an 18-month tenure with Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq, which he left in January.

Despite being heavily linked with a nostalgic return to Rangers, where Gerrard clinched the Scottish Premiership title without losing a game during the 2020-21 season, he has yet to step back into the dugout.

The 44-year-old has been keeping busy with extensive punditry work during his hiatus from management. In a recent interview, when asked about his aspirations to manage the Reds, Gerrard was candid.

Gerrard told the 'Ally's Social Club' on TNT Sports: "I'll be brutally, brutally honest with you. I'd help Liverpool in any department at any minute of every day. I'd help them with anything."

But Gerrard demonstrated his integrity by making clear he doesn't wish for Slot, who has faced mounting pressure in recent weeks, to lose his position. The former England skipper added: "I don't want the Arne Slot to lose his job.

"I want him to fix this and turn it around and make Liverpool great. I was bouncing all over the city four or five months ago when Liverpool won the league.

"I'm a Liverpool fan. I want the best for Liverpool. But if Liverpool need me in any department at any time, I'll be there for them."

Liverpool's fortunes have been on the up of late. The Reds' 2-1 victory over Tottenham away from home on Saturday marked their third win in five matches, a result that catapulted them into fifth place.

Gerrard reflected on his tenure at Villa, which concluded in October 2022 after a defeat to Fulham left the team perilously close to the relegation zone.

He said: "Going into the second season, I'm thinking, 'We've taken Villa from 17th to seventh, eighth, ninth. We're in a good place. We've made three or four really strong signings. Let's go for top 10, maybe have a go at the League Cup. If Europe happens, brilliant.'
