Xabi Alonso has left his role as Real Madrid manager effective immediately, the Spanish club have confirmed. The news comes less than 24 hours after they were beaten by rivals Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final.
Two goals from Raphinha and a Robert Lewandowski finish were enough to see off Alonso's men, who are also four points behind in the Spanish title race.
Speculation around the 44-year-old's future has been ongoing throughout a rocky first six months in the job after an incredible spell with Bayer Leverkusen. The retired midfielder, at various times, is thought to have lost the backing of some key members of the dressing room.
Real Madrid Statement After Alonso's Sacking
Xabi Alonso
In a statement shared on the club's official website, Real Madrid confirmed that they have parted ways with the Spanish coach. Wishing him well in the future, the statement read:
"Real Madrid C. F. communicates that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to end his time as coach of the first team.
"Xabi Alonso will always have the affection and admiration of all Real Madrid because he is a legend of Real Madrid and has always represented the values of our club.
"Real Madrid will always be his home. Our club thanks Xabi Alonso and all his technical team for their work and dedication throughout this time, and wishes them good luck in this new stage of their lives."
Los Blancos have only lost two league matches all season and are still on course to qualify for the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League as Alonso departs with the Spanish club sitting seventh in the table. It just shows the extremely high standards the club have.

The club also confirmed in a separate announcement that former right-back Alvaro Arbeloa would be taking the hotseat immediately after Alonso's sacking.
Arbeloa, who also played for English giants Liverpool during his long and successful career, had been in charge of Real Madrid Castilla since May 2025, having replaced ex-Spain striker Raul Gonzalez. Now he will immediately step up to first-team duties after Alonso's departure.
